Hello there A.O. Followers! We hope this weeks instalment finds you well. This week we are continuing the Flash Fiction series with a look at a fantastic website dedicated to flash fiction and they are the wonderful folk at Flash! Friday. Rebekah at Flash! Friday is extremely dedicated to the art of flash fiction and post daily under certain titles all of which are interactive to get the creative mind whirring.
One of the weekly posts that I personally love is the warm-up Wednesday, the general premiss is that you are inspired by a picture that is posted and the guidelines are set based upon that. The Wednesday post isn't judged but is seen to be used as an outlet for writers and as a way to challenge themselves by working within a very specific yet broad brief. It also works as a forum for writers to comment on each others work and give feedback and learn from each others writing.
Then there is the big competition itself; Friday. For this the prompts are given in various forms and, from what I can gather, the word counts vary each week. You then post your story in the comments of the post and wait to be judged, scary stuff! The judges are on a rotation so it isn't biased in anyway and never the same person judging the stories all the time. If you happen to win then on the following Thursday you will be be spotlight feature for the sixty second interview segment. It is brilliant how Rebekah manages to come up with these clever briefs every week and not just for the main Friday post but for Wednesday as well.
Another very helpful tool this busy website offers is the Pyro segment, a way to get good critique as a writer, learn to critique if that is your thing or generally have a nose at what is going on in the land of flash fiction. I think it is another excellent tool this website offers to help promote good writing, and help writers improve their craft. Anyone can submit their work for critique and one is chosen each week with helpful hints for people to critique. As an avid reader I love visiting this website for access to wonderful snippets of fiction which usually results in me screaming “but what happens next” at my laptop screen, but also for an insight into how other people perceive the story that they are reading.
If you are a writer or reader this is definitely a website you need to check out and bookmark on your computer. If you are new to the writing scene and want to test the waters this is the perfect platform to do it on. We at A.O. Will be keeping a very close eye on this website for burgeoning talent and you should too!
